Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to class?

Just your good self! I will provide all the materials, equipment, drinks and snacks. For messy painting sessions you may wish to bring an apron/overall, but I will warn you about this closer to the time! If you would prefer to bring your own equipment this is absolutely fine too.

How much art experience do I need?

If you are doing Learn to draw/Learn to paint, none at all! These courses are designed for complete beginners. If you have a bit of art experience already feel free to book an ‘improvers course’, or contact me if you’re not sure which course to go for.

Should I do the courses in a certain order?

It’s marginally better to start with Learn to draw, then move on to Learn to paint, as drawing is used in some of the painting classes. However, if you’d rather start with painting, or just do one or the other, that’s fine too. If you’re not sure which level to go for (Learn to or Improvers), just drop me a line.

What if I find it really hard?!

Even with a beginners course it can be challenging to learn something completely new! If you are struggling, just let me know and I will provide as much extra support as you need – for example I can send over the materials and plan in advance of class, and provide some easier activities for you.

I don’t know anyone! Will I have to socialise?

Most people will be in the same boat as you, especially if you start with Learn to draw! Many of my students say they were anxious at first about meeting new people, but they're actually finding art class a very easy, non-pressured way to socialise. You can chat as you create or just drop into a creative zone and have some quiet time ;)

What is ‘improvers’?

The improvers course follows straight on from ‘Learn to’, there is no gap in between! We will keep practising the foundation skills such as tone, mark-making and proportion that we covered in Learn to draw, or colour-mixing and painting techniques from Learn to paint – while also introducing some new skills such as working in one-point perspective.

What if I miss a class?

That’s totally fine, life sometimes gets in the way! If you have a holiday planned or have to miss a class due to illness etc., just let me know so I can send over some resources to help you to catch up.
